Weathering
is the process of changing the composition and the breaking of rocks or other
materials that occur on the surface of the earth due to the physical, chemical,
and biological processes. Weathering is a natural process that works to destroy
rocks to the ground. The weathering process destroys and dissolves rock
minerals into this soil supported by factors such as time, rock type,
topography, organism, and climate. The agents that play a role include water,
ice, acid, salt, plants, animals, and temperature changes.
Various Types of Weathering
1. Physical Weathering and Examples
a) Physical weathering or often called mechanical weathering is a process of weathering rocks caused by the influence of physical factors on rocks. The most dominant factors in this type of weathering are air temperature, pressure, and salt crystallization. This type of weathering can only be found in extreme climates, such as subtropics, desert areas, coastal areas, and areas with steep topography. Some examples of weathering physics we can find on earth include: Desolate rocks in the desert due to extreme daily weather changes. High temperatures during the day make rock expanding, then at night the air temperature drops and makes rocks shrink. This process occurs repeatedly and allows the mineral bonds in the rocks to weaken so that rocks break down into several parts.
b) Crystallization of brine to rocks in coastal ecosystems. The crystallization of salt water in rock pores around the coastal ecosystem will depress the rocks endogenously to allow rocks to burst.
c) Rockslide in a steep topographic area. Landslides occur due to high pressure on the rocks of the rock bottom. The pressure causes the bond between the rocks to weaken and apart from each other.
2. Weathering Chemicals and Examples
Chemical weathering is a weathering process that results from changes in chemical structure of rocks through certain reactions. The reactions that occur in the weathering process there are 3 kinds, namely solution, hydrolysis, and oxidation. Examples of chemical weathering through these three reactions include:
a) Lime limestone dissolution process due to its reaction to water.
b) Rainwater hydrolysis results in an increase in the acidity level around the rocks. Ion H + allows corrosion of rocks.
c) Oxidation in rocks rich in iron minerals allows the bonding of minerals in rock surfaces to become weak and degraded.
3. Biological weathering and examples
Weathering biology or often called organic weathering is a process of weathering rocks done by the organism through its activities around the environment of the rock. The organisms that play a role in this kind of weathering can be animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, to humans.
The biological weathering process involves two ways, namely biochemical and mechanical means. The following is an example of biological weathering through the 2 ways.
a) The growth of moss on the rock surface allows the rocks to degrade. The moisture of the rock surface due to the absorption of roots and the high pH around the surface of the rock due to excretion of residual metabolism of moss makes the surface of rocks corrosion.
b) Penetration of plant roots into the sidelines of rocks suppress the rocks so that they experience a split.

How the process of weathering occurs ?

The iron ions (II) formed at the anode subsequently oxidized to form iron (III) ions which then form the hydrated oxide compound, which is iron rust. As to which part of the iron acts as anode and which part acts as a cathode, it depends on various factors, such as impurities, or the density of the metal.
